Music has always been an important part of my life. It has been a means of expression, community, and personal growth. I believe that for everybody, of any age or background, music can be a powerful source of learning, confidence, and emotional wellbeing. And I believe that studying piano is the best first step in any musical journey. I value helping my students become creative thinkers and independent learners. I do this through asking and encouraging questions, through teaching lessons suited to each student’s individual needs, and through inviting students to make their own creative decisions.
In my piano studio, we focus not only on developing technical abilities, but on developing musical abilities as well, for instance:
Sensitivity to harmony, dissonance, and tone
Score analysis
Deep understanding of rhythm
Music theory and ear training
Knowledge of musical phrases and sentences
Attention to beauty and detail
I value kindness and respect above all else between the teacher and student. I've found in myself and others that any piano student showing up with a desire to learn and a willingness to push themselves can create something truly beautiful.
